Distinguished and Famous people from Canning
🏛️ George Wilson
George Wilson was an early local resident and businessman who served in local government, including as the first mayor of the Queens Park Municipality. The suburb of Wilson was named in his honour in 1958 after a residents' petition. His community service had already been recognised when the recreation ground near Kent Street Weir was renamed Wilson Park in 1939. His name therefore appears in both the neighbourhood and its riverside landscape, preserving the memory of municipal work that helped shape the area before its major suburban expansion.
🎨 Nene Gare
Nene Gare’s later home was at Shelley, where she continued a life combining writing and painting. Best known for The Fringe Dwellers, she also produced memoirs drawing on Adelaide childhood, Carnarvon and life in New Guinea. After returning to Perth in 1962 she resumed exhibiting, painting the Swan River, her garden and local landmarks. Some sales supported organisations she cared about. Shelley is a documented home, not a residence inferred simply from a hospital death. Her story offers a local connection with an artist whose public concerns were carried through both pictures and prose.
